Microsoft Unbundles Teams and Office: What You Need to Know

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced it will sell its messaging and video app Teams separately from its Office product globally. This announcement came six months after the organization unbundled the two products in Europe to avoid a possible EU antitrust fine.

What this means for customers is that Microsoft will offer:

  • A new lineup of Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites that do not include Teams
  • A new standalone Teams offering for Enterprise customers

Changes to Microsoft 365 Business Suites

Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard and Business Premium customers will continue to have Teams bundled with their license. Existing customers also can choose the new version of each suite without Teams.

New customers can choose any of the three suites, either with or without Teams.

Frontline suites (Microsoft 365 F1, Office 365 F3 and Microsoft 365 F3) also will have versions with and without Teams.

Changes to Enterprise Suites

Office 365 E1, Office 365 E3, Office 365 E5, Microsoft 365 E3 and Microsoft 365 E5 suites with Teams will no longer be available to new subscribers. These suites with Teams only are available to customers with existing licenses that include Teams as of April 1, 2024.

Customers who currently are subscribed to any of the Enterprise suites will be grandfathered in and can continue to use the bundled suite with Teams. If they wish to switch to the new version without Teams, they can do so on their contract anniversary or renewal.

New customers can choose any of the previously mentioned suites but also will have to purchase a Microsoft Teams Enterprise license to use Teams.
