When Should You Add Exchange Online Plan 2 to Your Microsoft 365 Subscription?

Tired of spending time deleting emails just to free up space? If your team is constantly hitting inbox limits, there’s an easier way.

When your primary mailbox is constantly nearing capacity it’s time to consider making better use of company-level archiving policies. If that doesn’t solve your problem, then it’s time to consider expanding your storage with Exchange Online Plan 2.

Instead of manually managing space or deleting important data, this plan gives you more total space. It’s just putting off the pain for a little longer, but it might be worth it to upgrade rather than paying your employees to manage their inboxes.

For most people, the storage limit of any Business license will offer plenty of space, even if you tend to save a lot of emails.

But for those who need the extra space, maybe because they send and receive emails that contain large attachments like high-resolution images, audio files or videos, there’s Microsoft Exchange Online Plan 2, an add-on that can greatly increase your storage limit.

What is Microsoft Exchange Online Plan 2?

Exchange Online Plan 2, which costs $8 per user, per month, is an add-on that offers larger storage limits for emails. You could purchase Exchange Online P2 by itself, but it only comes with email and not the other Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. that you get with any Business license.

As noted in the chart above, it doubles the size of your primary mailbox storage from 50 GB to 100 GB no matter which Business license you have. If you pair Exchange Online P2 with Business Basic or Business Standard, your archive mailbox limit will increase significantly to 1.5 TB if you enable auto-expanding archive. With Business Premium, you already receive 1.5 TB of archive mailbox.

Try Archiving Emails First

While Exchange Online Plan 2 is an easy way to quickly increase your primary mailbox storage, we’d first recommend archiving emails you want to keep but don’t need in your primary mailbox.

With Business Premium especially, you can have up to 1.5 TB of archive storage without paying an extra $8 per user, per month to double your primary mailbox storage.

If you’ve archived all you can and still need more storage, then Exchange Online P2 is there for you.
