Why We Utilize Service Express for Server Warranties

Many organizations have opted to move their operations to the cloud, but some may have to use an on-premises server due to their line-of-business software, or they simply like having their data stored on-site.

Those with an on-premises server most likely purchased a warranty through the server manufacturer. These warranties (most of which are three or five years) can cover any hardware or software repairs needed if the server fails.

Because the server is the core element of an organization’s network, having a warranty can be the difference between a massive disruption to business operations and a small hiccup.

While we encourage our clients to purchase their first server warranties through the OEM (original equipment manufacturer), once the original warranty has expired, we advise them to utilize warranties through our partner, Service Express, which is headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Service Express’s warranties offer the same coverage as the OEM’s but are less expensive and allow for more flexibility for the client.

What Warranties Does Service Express Offer?

Service Express offers 24x7x4 warranty coverage, which means 24/7 on-site coverage with four-hour on-site response for covered hardware.

“A three-year warranty from HPE is cheaper for the first three years of the server’s life. But once you get into Year 4, it’s in Client A’s best interest to go with a Service Express warranty, not only because it’s cheaper, but because the client won’t be locked into a yearlong contract.”

It’s the same coverage as a three-year warranty from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), for example. The only difference is that Service Express’s warranties are month-to-month, while HPE’s shortest post-warranties are one year.

Here is an example scenario our clients who purchase servers often face:

  • Client A buys a server and even though they expect it to last five years, they start with a three-year warranty from OEM.
  • Five-year warranties are available from OEM, but commitment is a big issue, as Client A doesn’t know if it’ll even need a server in five years.
  • In Year 4, Client A could purchase another yearlong warranty from OEM, but they are expensive and force commitment for another year.
  • Once Client A’s three-year warranty expires, they can purchase a month-to-month warranty from Service Express and cancel it if the server needs to be replaced.
HPE 3-year warrantyService Express month-to-monthHPE 1-year post warranty
$1,800 total ($50/month)$75/month$1,400 total ($116.66/month)

As you can see from the table above, a three-year warranty from HPE is cheaper for the first three years of the server’s life. But once you get into Year 4, it’s in Client A’s best interest to go with a Service Express warranty, not only because it’s cheaper, but because the client won’t be locked into a yearlong contract.

If Client A decides it wants to move to the cloud six months after the three-year warranty expires, it can do so with a Service Express warranty.

Server warranties are a necessary investment because our clients rely on their servers to keep their businesses running.

Our partnership with Service Express allows our clients to continue that coverage for a lower price without being locked in for at least another year.
